Design Tips from Jamie: Farmhouse Style
When did the farmhouse style take off?
Although you could find the style in smaller regions of the country for the past 25 years, I’ve noticed that its presence has grown quickly in the past 10 years and can now be considered a popular style for designers across the country.
How do you describe farmhouse? (The feel, rooms/types of homes it's often featured in, common materials/features)
I would consider farmhouse a style that is meant to convey a warm and inviting atmosphere. Similar to how most trends begin, the style originated just as a way of life. It was first popularized in rural settings, by necessity. Now I’m seeing farmhouse design incorporated in any kind of room in all types of homes. Common features are natural wood, distressed or reclaimed wood, and neutral color palettes dominated by whites, creams, and light colors.
Why do you think it's such a popular design style?
Its warm and welcoming aesthetic is desirable for homeowners who are looking for a comforting space in the fast-paced world we’re living in. It’s also very versatile. Farmhouse elements can be incorporated into various design schemes, allowing for personalization and flexibility. I’ve seen it merged with Organic, Industrial, and even Luxe aesthetics. I think this is ultimately what has made it appeal to homeowners from all walks of life and allows the look to evolve when new trends become more prevalent.
What are your personal thoughts about the style? (Don't be afraid to be opinionated!)
Our products at Jamie Young Company are intended to evoke a feeling of casual luxury in the home. I’m seeing more and more that designers are really utilizing the natural materials and neutral color palettes of our product line to elevate the look of farmhouse spaces. It’s a testament to how you can take the farmhouse style in any direction that works for you, and that’s a good thing!
Is farmhouse overdone? Materials/specific looks that are overused?
If not used in moderation or mixed with other styles, it can be overdone. I think shiplap and farmhouse doors had their moment and are a bit overused now.
Is there a way to modernize farmhouse style?
Farmhouse can definitely be modernized – its versatility is a big reason why we’re seeing it everywhere. I think we’re going to find that farmhouse will evolve even more into a transitional design style which melds with other aesthetics into something that will truly work in any type of home.
