Design Tips from Jamie: Mirror Styling
Where to hang a mirror in a living room?
A mirror can be placed in a living room strategically not only to enhance the overall design, but to create an illusion of space and reflect light. Hanging a mirror across from a window will reflect the natural light and make the room feel brighter and spacious. People often default to mounting a tv over a fireplace, but I would recommend styling a tv elsewhere and instead using the open wall space to hang a mirror, creating a focal point that adds depth to the room instead of a black screen.
Where to hang a mirror in a bedroom?
Along with the bathroom, mirrors in the bedroom serve more of a functional purpose than elsewhere in a house. Hanging a mirror above a dresser or vanity can create a functional and stylish area for getting ready in the morning. Leaning a large floor mirror against the wall is a more dramatic design element, plus it’s useful if wall hanging isn't an option. An area of the bedroom to hang mirrors that I’m seeing more and more is above nightstands – mirrors there reflect ambient light from lamps, giving the room a cozy atmosphere. Similar to the living room, hanging a mirror opposite a window can reflect natural light and make the bedroom appear brighter and more spacious.
Hanging a mirror at the end of a stairwell (or long hallway) can bounce light upward and make it feel more open and inviting. If you have a large non-functional fireplace, placing a mirror inside can create the illusion of depth and make the room feel more spacious. The exterior of the house is often overlooked as a place to hang mirrors, but they can be a beautiful way to reflect greenery and sunlight on a covered porch.
